O CABAZ DA PRAIA
Name of establishment
O Cabaz da Praia, Albufeira
Traditional Portuguese restaurant in the heart of the old town. Old–fashioned, compact and cosy, it’s been an Albufeira institution since 1945. The name translates into English as The Beach Basket.
Good choice of fish, seafood and meat dishes, with cataplanas, stews, fish soups and steaks a speciality.
The food reflects the place: good honest Portuguese fare, tasty and consistent. It’s not going to set the culinary world on fire, but the combination of food, ambience and location make it a great all-round experience.
Good selection of Portuguese reds, whites and rosés.
Why do you like it?
The location - it has a fabulous terrace with spectacular views over Pescadores beach.
The seafood - peer into the kitchen and you know everything is freshly prepared.
The friendly waiting staff - who speak perfect English if your Portuguese is shaky.
When to go?
Late lunchtimes for a seat on the terrace and a cooling breeze. Early evening for sundowners with a view.
They probably won’t thank me for saying this, but the interior is nothing special, and if you can’t get a table on the terrace, it’s just not the same.
Parking in the old town can be a nightmare, especially in summer. Be prepared to seek out this restaurant on foot.
