Name of company

Pure Flow Motions

What type of activity is it?

Week-long surf and yoga retreats

What makes it special?

A mix of yoga, surfing, meditation, QiGong, healthy food and nature walks, designed to help you reconnect and rediscover your mind and body.

The company is run by three specialists in their respective fields: Michael (yoga), Nicolau (nature walks) and Marta (surfing) with help from surfing instructor Christina, offering a varied and interesting combination of activities with plenty of downtime to relax.

Where do you participate in this activity?

The company uses a stylish contemporary hotel in Sagres as its base for the retreats, with surfing and walking taking place on or along some of the western Algarve’s most beautiful beaches.

The accommodation

This is no ‘roughing it in a hostel’ holiday! The hotel is a chic four-star property, perched on top of a cliff with incredible sea views. All-white, it acts like a minimalist art gallery, allowing the nature and the scenery to be the star.

Participants on the retreat will be roomed close together, and use the hotel’s purpose-built Mind & Body studio (as well as the hotel gardens or adjacent beach) for the yoga sessions. They also have full use of all the other hotel facilities, which include a spa and an outdoor pool.

The facilities

All equipment (eg yoga mats, wetsuits, surf boards, etc) is provided. Otherwise, just bring with you what you would on a normal holiday - swimsuit, hat, shorts and T-shirt, sunscreen, etc - for the active days out.

Transport to and from the hotel to the various daily locations is also provided.

The training

The retreat is for all levels, with classes split if necessary. For surfing, beginners get basic instruction, with more advanced surfers offered surf guidance and improvement lessons deepening their surfing skills in balance, flexibility and strength. Surfing is not obligatory, as some guests sometimes prefer to relax on the beach. The yoga sessions are for all yoga levels.

It’s a very friendly company, and the instructors reflect that: chatty, helpful, patient, informative without being patronising, laid-back but always safety conscious.

Why do you like it?

You don’t have to be an expert in any of the disciplines to enjoy it. In fact, you will probably find most people on the retreat are new to both yoga and surfing. It’s a great way to try both, and of course have a great holiday (and make new friends) into the bargain. You can come on your own, as a couple or in a small group: as long as you’re the sociable type, it will be a fantastic experience.

When to go?

The retreats are run from March to November. See the website for dates, availability and prices.

Food options

Breakfast and dinner are served in the hotel. Warm home-made lunches are brought to you wherever the outdoor activities happen every day.

On the last evening of the retreat there is a special dinner at a surprise location.

Note: the three daily meals are vegetarian, using locally-grown products as much as possible. Fresh fruits, snacks, teas and drinks are also provided. Ideally this is meant to be a non-alcohol week, but it’s not a repressive boot camp if you fancy the occasional glass.

Insider knowledge

Out of season, Michael, Nicolau and Marta all run their own companies offering private lessons and courses in their respective disciplines.

Most retreats are for groups of around 10-15 people, to ensure you have personal, hands-on instruction.

Prices are for six nights in a hotel suite with all meals, instruction, etc provided, and based on 2 people sharing. Flights, plus return transfers from Faro to Sagres, are extra.
