Name of spa

Bela Vista Spa by L'Occitane, Praia da Rocha

Style and ambience

Part of the five-star boutique Bela Vista Hotel and operated by the prestigious French spa products brand L'Occitane - so not surprisingly it has the sophisticated feel you would expect from the combination.

It’s quiet, relaxing, and compact enough so that you feel comfortable rather than intimidated, as can be the case with some larger spas.

Although underground, clever use is made of a large wall-window to give natural daylight, and the colour scheme is a mix of soft and soothing pastel shades.

The treatments

Body exfoliation, hydrotherapy baths, manicures/pedicures/waxing, facials, eye treatments and a selection of massages including lymphatic, back, leg, relaxing, soothing, rejuvenating, deep tissue and holistic.

The facilities

Reception is at hotel/street level. You then go down a flight of stairs (complete with stair-lift for the less able) to the two changing rooms, five treatment rooms (including two rooms for couples) and communal spa facilities, which comprise sauna, hammam, plunge pool, relaxation area with four large double beds, and a gym.

Why do you like it?

As with the hotel itself, it’s an oasis amid the rather brasher surroundings of the rest of Praia da Rocha. You can also buy a range of products from the spa shop.

When to go?

It’s open year-round (except on the few occasions when the hotel itself is closed - see below), and like a lot of spas, it’s a good wet-weather alternative out of season.

In summer, it tends to be a little quieter (and easier to book treatments) during the morning or early afternoon, when many hotel guests will be by the pool or on the beach. It then starts to get busy.

It’s also an ideal size to take over exclusively for a small group of friends, and makes an ideal hen party location (for the discreet type of event of course - if you want to get raucous, there’s always Praia da Rocha itself!)

Food options

Water and herbal teas are available free of charge in the spa. The hotel itself has a lounge bar, pool bar and a restaurant. See our full review for details.
