Number of holes

What year was the course opened?

Who was the designer?

Ronald Fream

What type of golf club is it?

Non-members are able to play Vale da Pinta for a fee. There is a handicap limit of 27 for men and 35 for ladies, although I wasn’t challenged when I went to play the course.

Teeing-off times

During peak season, it’s highly recommended to pre-book if you intend to play in the morning. During peak times you are likely to be made into a four ball by the starter. You must report to the starter at least five minutes before your tee time. If you’re happy to play in the afternoon, then I suggest this, as it’s a more enjoyable experience.

Dress code

Normal golfing attire.

Golfing facilities

A golf academy within the Pestana resort, plus buggies and golf clubs available to hire. On site there is a putting green but no range.

Why do you love it?

This course has a bit of everything. Very cleverly designed, with a large amount of variety from hole to hole. For a low handicapper it will provide a tougher challenge perhaps than the other Pestana courses.

What could be improved?

The speed of play in the mornings during peak season is something that needs addressing. The club wants to get as many people off as possible but not everyone wants to be paired up and endure a five-hour round.

Best hole

The 5th is a scenic par 3. around 140 metres long. Challenging but fair like many of the holes at Pinta.

Level of challenge

The course offers a fair challenge to all abilities of golfers. My experience was somewhat dampened by teeing off during peak season at peak time, but I have no doubt it’s fine at quieter times.

Who plays there?

Pestana have built and sold a lot of properties around the Pinta and neighbouring Gramacho golf courses, and a lot of the “locals” tend to play in the morning.

When to go

The course is busier in the traditional Portugal high season (February to April and September to November) and the prices out of season reflect this.

Food options?

Had an enjoyable baguette and chips from the bar snack menu. Nothing special in the way of views but still enjoyable nevertheless.

Non-golfing facilities

There is also a restaurant, swimming pool and bowls pitch, all on the Pestana resort.

Operated by

Pestana Golf & Resorts

Pestana have started offering membership to their courses. The cost of a one-off round varies on the time of the year. Check their website or phone first. When I played, I felt it represented good value for money.

Opening times

The course is open seven days a week and tends to only shut for bad weather and maintenance.
