Martinhal Beach Resort & Hotel, Sagres


Modern five-star hotel, part of the larger resort complex located above Martinhal beach. The architecture blends perfectly into the natural surroundings, due to its low-rise design, clever use of wood, stone and other traditional materials, the sympathetic landscaping, and the overall staggered, terraced lay-out.

The main hotel is chic without being self-consciously ‘styled’ and the beachfront hotel rooms are inspired in both their look and location.


Sagres (and the rest of the western Algarve) seems to exist in its own time zone, and if you don’t feel relaxed the moment you drive off the motorway at Lagos, you will as soon as you walk through the doors at Martinhal. That’s not to say you’ll be roughing it, or that the service is casual - quite the opposite in fact. But they do seem to have got the balance just right between laid-back luxury and knowing how to look after their guests.


We stayed in one of the superb Beach Rooms, perched right overlooking the broad sweep of Martinhal bay. Wooden-clad and fitting seamlessly into the location, the interiors are cool and refreshing, decorated in soft pastel shades of aqua and biscuit with unfussy furniture and some nice touches like the Moroccan-style wicker standard lamps. Features include huge bathrooms with a bath and separate double shower, large and exceptionally comfortable double beds, all mod cons, and either a patio or terrace with the proverbial ‘view to die for.’

Other options include the Beach Suites (taking up two storeys and giving you a separate lounge as well as the bedroom), the Terrace Rooms in the main hotel, and a wide selection of privately-owned suites and villas spread throughout the resort, all of which are included in the hotel’s inventory.

Food and drink

Within the main hotel are O Terraço restaurant, As Dunas beach restaurant, a Beach Club pool bar and the M Bar surf bar. There is also an Italian restaurant and a Juice Bar in the Village Square, and the Club 98 bar in the sports complex.

Why do you like the hotel?

The western Algarve waited a long time for a five-star resort, and Martinhal does not disappoint. It is laid-back luxury at its best with a very Portuguese twist, and a genuine asset to the region.

What other facilities does the hotel have?

Martinhal is a resort in progress, currently consisting of the hotel, a range of rentable accommodation, a spa, a tennis and sports club, a secondary pool with a health club and snack bar, a kids clubs, and the Village Square, which also includes a grocery shop. Luxury swim and beachwear company Biondi Couture also has a boutique at the hotel.

What could be improved?

Satellites and Sagres don’t mix too well at the moment, so Internet access can sometimes be hit-and-miss. The same applies to the TV signal - although who really wants to watch telly when you can go walking, swimming, surfing, horse riding, you name it…

When to go?

Definitely a Spring-to-Autumn hotel. The wild west can get pretty wild in the winter.

This is a 'Stop The World I Want To Get Off' kind of place, perfect for romantic weekends, activity holidays, family beach holidays and stress-busting breaks.

The accommodation options are almost endless. The hotel and resort run in conjunction, and you can book anything from a studio-style room for two to a four-bedroom villa or a cluster of units, ideal for family holidays and groups of friends.

Martinhal has been created by Roman and Chitra Stern in partnership with UK hoteliers Nigel Chapman and Nicholas Dickinson, the founders of Luxury Family Hotels (Fowey Hall, Woolley Grange, Moonfleet Manor and Ickworth) and Alias Hotels.

The resort was planned by Conran & Partners with interiors by London-based designer Michael Sodeau.
