Name of Restaurant

La Terrazza, Vale do Lobo

Traditional Italian pizzeria/trattoria (although in a modern building). Very relaxed and comfortable.

This is a head-on, full of gusto, family-frenzied dining environment. Possibly not the place to come for a quiet romantic meal but great for families, groups, couples, singles, oldies and the young. Nothing seems to floor a very competent team of staff who effortlessly seem to cope with holiday madness.

What to eat?

The menu has fond memories of the type of Italian restaurant you used to eat in as a child. Starters range from soup (minestrone and tomato, of course) to bruschetta, calamari, white bait and garlic prawns. Salad and vegetarian fans are also well catered for. Great pizzas and pasta dishes to suit most tastebuds, with the meat and fish sections well balanced, and a choice of chicken, veal, steak and calves liver. Stand-out dishes include steak in brandy and dolcelatte sauce, breaded chicken Milanese served with spaghetti pomodoro, red snapper served with garlic, white wine & basil, and monkfish cooked in olive oil with a garlic, tomato, white wine & parsley sauce. The likes of seared salmon fillets are there for those who want to play a little safe. The focus of the menu is on comfort and reliability, but allied to fresh, tasty ingredients: something you don't always get in very busy 'resort' restaurants.

What to drink?

The wine list has a good selection of Italian wines. Allow yourself to be persuaded away from Portuguese wines for one night.

Insider knowledge

This is a really good place for a celebration, and the staff know how to make it happen. Cakes can be ordered and children will love it here. In the summer the outside terrace does turn into a bit of a 'kid fest' but that is the appeal of Vale do Lobo. Easter weekend for instance was joyously boisterous!

Anything that clients should know about?

Book at busy times. When we reviewed it the place was full to the rafters.

The inspirational bit?

Delivering to your expectations of what a family Italian restaurant should be. This is not necessarily about fine dining: this is about good honest food delivered quickly, consistently and with real flavour. You could not fail to be taken in by the great atmosphere.
