AGUA NA BOCA

Name of establishment

Agua na Boca, Vilamoura

Style

Billed as a Concept Design Store, it’s a collection of quirky food ideas and innovative design items mainly for the kitchen and office, and includes cookies, candies, cupcakes, ice-creams, coffees, teas, chocolates and liquors as well as hand-made jewellery pieces and unusual-shaped bags by Anabela Vieira, designer and co-owner.

Ambience

The interior is modern, bright and inviting. Items are clearly laid out in the store, which is small but packed full of pieces you’ll want to pick up and examine closer. The area outside the store transforms into a casual seating area in the summer with low tables and beanbags - a perfect spot to sip an espresso and watch the yachts sail by.

What to buy?

As well as the design items, feast your eyes on the cupcakes: toppings include mascarpone cheese, choco-vanilla, pop-star pink icing, choc-cookies, After Eight, Agua na Boca Signature, Nutella and themed cupcakes for any occasion, and even ice-cream toppings.

Popular design brands are Fred (from the USA), Illy, Feito A Mão, São Tomé, Papabubble and Mestre Cacau (an Alentejo chocolate maker).

Concept products include: pick your nose cups (cups with the nose of a different animal on the side), red rose bags (folded in the shape of a rose that opens into a shopping bag and a change purse), ice cubes in the shape of space invaders, oven mitt glove with a diamond (not real!) where the ring finger would be, Table Saw (to cut and serve your cake slices), fly swatter in the shape of a computer delete button, hand towels folded in the shape of a flower or milkshake, Talk to the Hand post-it notes, Drip Clips (paperclips in a bowl the shape of a bath-tub with centre taps) and Air-Fork One (a kids’ fork in the shape of an airplane).

Why do you like it?

Owners Ricardo and Anabela have travelled to trade fairs around the world to source their concept products. Papabubble for example (who make the lollipops and candies) are exclusive to the store in Portugal. The couple decorated the store themselves and it is clear that they come from a design background of graphics and interiors.

It is a store like no other in the Algarve - unique in its products with a clever mix of ‘out of the ordinary’.

When to go?

Good to visit at any time of the year (except January when they are usually closed). Take advantage of the cupcakes and cookies that can be pre-ordered (give five day’s notice) for birthdays, weddings, anniversaries and parties. Handmade by the team, they can be decorated however you desire.

Winner of the new designer award in Frankfurt in 2010, Anabela also takes oversees orders for her bags. Check out the bags and other pieces on www.tomapegaleva.blogspot.com
