Name of establishment

The Raj at Garbe, Holiday Inn Algarve, Armação de Pêra

One of the oldest Indian restaurants in the region. Open since the mid 1990s, it has built up a reputation for consistently good quality Indian food in a relaxed atmosphere. The decor is a mixture of old style holiday hotel and a typical Indian restaurant but does not distract from its best feature - the amazing sea views.

Although the restaurant is large, the seating is arranged to make each table feel private. The atmosphere is informal and the staff are attentive without being overbearing, while the service is quick and efficient.

A good range of different Indian dishes, with explanations of each style provided in the menu. The sauces are rich and creamy and made to your own specifications, so if you prefer your curry mild you can be sure you won't have your head blown off, while those who like it hot will be more than satisfied.

A good variety of Portuguese wines reasonably-priced between €13 and €22. Take your pick from red, white, green or sparkling.

Why do you like it?

This is a restaurant with a view-and-a-half, which makes it feel a little more special than your average Indian eatery. The service is faultless, with staff happy to explain dishes to those who are less familiar with the nuances of Indian food, while the menu is large enough to please lovers of this type of cuisine.

If you are going with a group and there are members of the party who perhaps aren’t over-keen on Indian food, there are a number of Western food options, as well as a children's menu.

What could be improved?

There is only limited parking, which is sufficient for winter but not enough for the summer months, when you will need to look for a space in the neighbouring car park by the taxi rank.

When to go?

The restaurant is open in the evenings only, but if you book an early evening table in the summer, then you will be able to have a fantastic sunset view from the restaurant, which overlooks the beach.
