Why do you like it?
This is no ‘walk in the park’, but nor is it an impossible course to score on. In our case, a 27 handicap played a 9 handicap and neither had an unfair advantage. The course is very scenic, and the views from the valley in particular provided an alternative Algarve perspective.
What could be improved?
We had no ‘irritation’ points. In fact, when our rented clubs failed to arrive, the staff at Amendoeira could not have been swifter or more helpful in their response.
The 1st hole opens out to a sweeping downhill dogleg to the left, and gives a good indication of the game ahead. However we found the 8th hole (Stroke Index 1) to be quite challenging and very satisfying to play.
The course does not seem to have nominated a Signature Hole itself, but possibly playing round the dogleg left into the 18th green, surrounded by cliffs, might be it. It’s certainly a satisfying end to a good course.
Level of challenge
We were a 9 handicap (‘M’) and a 27 handicap (‘G’). We both enjoyed the course and both found it playable: G even hit a birdie and a couple of pars. Long carries mean it is not suited to short hitters off the tee. The course punishes wayward shots (as ‘M’ occasionally found), but fairways are reasonably generous with fair landing areas.
Who plays there?
The course is a test for low handicap golfers - so look out for some current and retired golf circuit names.
When to go
Seasons reflect the low/mid/high season pricing that generally applies in the Algarve and there is some reflection of this in the pricing of packages.
The clubhouse has a bar and a large restaurant area serving typical clubhouse menus.
Amendoeira is a family resort, with golf and tennis as a focus. There is a spa, gym, and also astroturf football pitches.
