Six reasons to visit...Monchique

With not a sign of commercialisation in sight, A Charette is a real locals' restaurant specialising in superb traditional mountain cuisine. Work up an appetite with the climb and then enjoy hearty rustic dishes in authentic surroundings.

Monchique is famous for its Medronho, a local spirit known for either putting hairs on your chest or burning them off. People travel from all over the country to Monchique to buy the smoothest Medronho, and local producers sell their own from Largo dos Chorões in the Loja de Mel e Medronho in Monchique town itself.

Every year Monchique hosts a sausage fair, usually in early March. This is the place to pick up some great quality chouriço sausage at great prices and also a good opportunity to buy other local food produce - including some Monchique honey.

Caldas de Monchique is a traditional mountain spa village - check out the hydrotherapy spa for a range of medical treatments.

Put on your walking boots and head into the forests with the kids to discover the babbling brooks and streams among the trees. You don't need to venture too far into the woods to feel miles away from civilisation.
