Six reasons to visit...Sagres

Vila Velha (Rua Patrao Antonio Faustino, Sagres, tel. 282 624 788) offers an eclectic mix of Portuguese favourites with an international flavour courtesy of Dutch owner-chef Lia - fresh, tasty and interesting food, including several vegetarian options. Peaceful, relaxing and indicative of the western Algarve: the perfect place to escape from the rest of the world. A Eira do Mel in nearby Vila do Bispo (Estrada do Castelejo, tel. 282 639 016) is a traditional western Algarve farmhouse that subscribes to the Slow Food movement - the unhurried pleasure to be gained from serving good quality, freshly-cooked, and locally-produced food including wild boar stew with red wine, rabbit cataplana and great fish. No wonder it's always busy.

A Rosa dos Ventos (Praça da Republica, Sagres, tel. 282 624 480) is a friendly bar in the main square that attracts an international crowd, and is the perfect starting point for a night on the (easily walkable) town. Nocturnal surf dudes pack into Mitic cocktail bar (Avenida Comandante Matoso, Sagres, tel. 964 139 350) to be entertained by top DJs and live local bands. Stunning sea views if you can focus that far. After a night on the town, fall into (or out of) Dromedario (Avenida Comandante Matoso, Sagres, tel. 282 624 219), one of the focal points for nightlife and the in-place to party until dawn. Watch out for the wicked caipirinhas. Or round off the night with pulsating music and an extensive drinks selection at Topas Disco (Sitio da Botelha, Sagres, tel. 916 610 353).

Don’t expect designer stores or glitzy shopping malls. But if it’s quirky gifts, beachwear or surfboards and accessories you’re after, there’s a fair sprinkling of boutique-style shops in and around the main town centre such as Bongouro (tel. 967 574 880) and Maretta (tel. 282 624 535).

The beaches are magnificent, but watch out for the strong currents on some of the less sheltered stretches. For older kids and teenagers however, as well as adults, Sagres is the perfect location to take up a whole range of adventure activities, including surfing (Sagres Natura, tel. 282 624 072 or Filsurf, tel 914 426 591), big game fishing (Cape Cruiser, tel. 919 751 175) and landsailing (Ecokarts, tel. 913 372 332).

The west is all about the great outdoors: watch the sunset from Cabo de Sao Vincente whilst listening to the crashing waves of the Atlantic, find a beach all to yourself, or wander around the old fort in Sagres where Henry the Navigator set up school to prove that the world didn’t end here. Next stop America.

Perched on a clifftop with incredible views of the small port of Baleeira and the western coastline, Memmo Baleeira (tel. 282 624 212) is like a minimalist art gallery. The all-white hotel allows the nature and scenery to be the star whilst not giving the eye anything to detract from its stunning location. A small spa, a great bar and a simplicity that is mesmerising. Martinhal Beach Resort (tel. 282 620 026) is chic without being self-consciously ‘styled’ - and the beachfront rooms are inspired. Perfect for romantic weekends, activity or family holidays and stress-busting spa breaks. Or try the eco-friendly restored village of Pedralva (tel. 282 639 342) for a unique rural tourism experience.
