Name of establishment
A Casa do Avô, Guia
Style and ambience
Traditional Portuguese (the name translates as ‘the house of the grandfather’) and decorated accordingly in a rustic style with lots of local artefacts. The buffet is laid out in the entrance area, which also has a bar: you then go into a large main dining room. There’s also a terrace at the back.
Traditional Portuguese, as you would expect, with a particular emphasis on Algarve produce and speciality dishes. There’s an extensive menu of starters, mains and desserts, whilst the buffet option - of over 30 hot and cold hors d’oeuvres - gives you the opportunity to try a little of everything.
Many customers combine the two, opting for the set menu comprising buffet starter, a choice of one of the two dishes of the day for main course, and dessert.
Typical main dishes, depending on the season, include seafood rice, fresh grilled fish, cataplana, bacalhau, xerem, shrimp piri-piri, squid, veal and wild boar.
There’s also a set lunch menu (Monday-Friday) comprising buffet starters, 3 hot dishes (soup, fish and meat), a drink with your meal and coffee - a popular choice for business lunches.
A wide choice from over 30 Portuguese wine producers, with the house wine changing each month to offer regular customers variety, and to showcase new and interesting wines.
Why do you like it?
A good opportunity, if you’re relatively new to Portuguese/Algarve cuisine, to try different dishes, in an unthreatening environment. Manager Nuno Encarnação speaks fluent English, and will be happy to guide you through the menu and wine list. The prices are also very reasonable, an advantage of being located away from the coast and the plethora of tourist traps.
What could be improved?
Some indication on the buffet spread to identify the less well-known ingredients? They’re rattled off at full speed and it’s hard to remember all of them.
Organic grocery Mercearia Bio has a display area in the restaurant, showcasing a range of products including jams, preserves, olive oil, tapenade, sun-dried tomatoes, etc which can be purchased on site. Orders can also be taken from the www.merceariabio.pt website, with delivery arranged for you.
