A Sardinha

Name of establishment

A Sardinha, Praia dos Arrifes, Galé, Albufeira

Style and ambience

Laid-back, kick-off-your-shoes beach bar/restaurant with a long wooden terrace overlooking Praia dos Arrifes, the quintessential quiet, picturesque Algarve cove. Family run, friendly service, and a place to stop clock-watching.

What to eat?

Fresh fish sold by weight is a speciality. Ask the owner, who’ll recommend something tasty and fairly priced (not always the case in holiday destinations!). They also do great chicken piri-piri, light meals, salads and snacks. And if you’re on the beach all day, it’s the perfect place to pop into for drinks and ice-creams.

What to drink?

Reasonably-priced wines from the Algarve and the rest of Portugal. Hard to beat a chilled bottle (or several) of Barranco Longo rosé on a hot day. Plus a full array of beers, cocktails, spirits, and hot and cold drinks.

Why do you love it?

The food is fresh, tasty, reasonably priced and consistently good. The service is excellent. The X-factor comes from the location. We may be giving away one of our best-kept secrets, but when you’re looking for a great beach restaurant tucked away from the crowds, and with a view you can gaze at all afternoon, this is the place.

What could be improved?

The approach road (not their fault of course) is a pock-marked dirt track, but you could argue that’s one of the reasons the masses haven’t discovered it.

When to go?

Perfect for long, lazy lunches. The ideal sundowner spot. And a place to listen to the lapping tide on summer nights.

Insider knowledge

Don’t be put off by the approach road. You’ll be convinced you’ve taken a wrong turn and be tempted to turn back. But it’s worth persevering.

Around 40 covers on the terrace, plus a small inside section, although it would be a shame to miss out on the view.

The tricky bit! Praia dos Arrifes is a small cove (only marked on the most detailed of maps), reached off the road from Galé to Albufeira, close to Praia de Sao Rafael. From the main beach at Galé, follow the signs towards Albufeira, and take a right turn between the CS Sao Rafael Suite and Best Western Maritur hotels. Turn left behind the Maritur hotel and follow the road round to the right, passing some construction work, and navigate the bumpy dirt road all the way down to the cove. Park on the cliff top and walk down the wooden steps to the restaurant. Not really suitable for the elderly, infirm or ‘precious’ car-owners.

Main courses from around €7, more for fresh fish. Reasonably priced wines and other drinks.

Opening times

Mid-morning and on into the evenings, every day. Closed in winter when it feels like it!!!
