Name of establishment

Ababuja, Alvor

Traditional Portuguese waterfront tavern inside (quite dark, cosy, filled with old photographs and seafaring paraphernalia) but surprisingly modern on the terrace, with a retractable roof to take account of the weather patterns.

Relaxed but buzzy atmosphere, with a good mix of tourists and locals, often in family groups. And the waiters are great fun.

What to eat?

Fresh fish you can choose from the counter, sardines grilled over the barbecue, a range of traditional Algarvean dishes, and a deliciously creamy Mozambique prawn curry made with coconut milk and fresh fruit.

What to drink?

A good selection of Portuguese wines. Ask the waiters for recommendations - they're always helpful.

Why do you love it?

The food is always good, the service impeccable, and the location is hard to beat - right on the harbour. You feel like you could sit and watch the boats - or the passers-by - all day. We often do.

When to go?

It's the perfect lunchtime-into-lazy-afternoon type of venue.

Insider knowledge

Some of the portion sizes are enormous - another tradition of the Algarve. You might want to split some of the main courses between you.

Fairly tight inside the main, older part of the restaurant, but there's plenty of space on the outside terrace which really is the main restaurant these days. It's usually busy but never feels cramped.

Right on the waterfront (Rua Ribeira) in Alvor, at the bottom of the hill. It's the second restaurant in, diagonally opposite the old fish market. You'll need to leave your car in the town's main parking area and walk for a couple of minutes.
