Name of establishment
Not just a supermarket...Apolonia is the Algarve's answer to M&S or Waitrose, an upmarket food and wine emporium as popular with expatriates and well-heeled locals as it is with visitors.
Modern, light, airy, well-designed, well-stocked and easy to move around, with clear signage. Nothing unusual there for a supermarket but something of a rarity in the Algarve - have you been in most Ali Supers or Pingo Doces?
What to buy?
Fresh meat from the butcher, fresh fish from the fish counter, cheeses and cold meats from the delicatessen, bread and pastries from the bakery, sushi counter, a wide variety of Portuguese and international branded food and drink products, and an extensive wine and liquor section.
This is also the place to find everything you didn't think you could buy in the Algarve. From spices to ethnic food, they have the most complete stock of luxury imported foods.
The fresh food is streets ahead of other supermarkets in the Algarve, although expect to pay a premium for the quality.
Why do you love it?
The original Apolonia was established in Almancil in 1983 and has become something of an institution in the Golden Triangle. The company's second store in Galé brought international quality food shopping to the central Algarve, with a third store in Lagoa opened in 2015.
All stores run regular promotions based around the times of the year (eg Valentine's, Easter, Christmas) or by themes (eg Italian, German). Keep an eye out on the website or in the local media.
The company also runs an online store.
All stores have a cafe.
