Name of restaurant
Restaurante Colina Verde, Algoz
Intimate and cosy, this is an ideal romantic hideaway, serving a selection of Mediterranean and Portuguese dishes.
The Moorish-inspired decor is complemented by bright paintings, while the menu is comprehensive enough for everyone to be able to find something they will love.
The table layout is designed to appeal both to couples, in the quieter nooks, and small groups on the larger tables, with both feeling equally comfortable.
The soft lighting, open fireplace and changing artwork make this a perfect place for a warm winter meal, while the large leafy terrace is great for a meal under the stars on warmer evenings.
Some inventive dishes are mixed with authentic Portuguese dishes, and it is well worth trying the house specialities which include açorda, a type of stew made with bread and prawns and served in an enormous fresh loaf. The pork with figs is another example of using local products to create mouth-watering dishes, while the hot stones used to cook your choice of fish or meat are perfect for groups.
A large wine list featuring some of the best Portuguese wines, priced very competitively. The house wine of Castello ‘Alba is very drinkable and is priced at €13 a bottle.
Why do you like it?
Owner Fernando is dedicated to creating the perfect ambience for couples and small groups, and has put together a menu of classics as well as some inventive options for those looking to try something a bit different.
The cosy corners, with heavy wooden tables, jewel-coloured glasses and beaded lamps, draw diners close, and have proved popular over the years, with repeat diners frequenting the restaurant for more than 10 years.
There are not many restaurants where you see an equal number of residents, local Portuguese clients, foreign visitors and Portuguese tourists all coming together. The range of clients is testament to the quality and appeal of the restaurant to all nationalities and age groups.
What could be improved?
For first time visitors this really isn't the easiest place to find, but it is well worth stopping to ask a local for some directions to get there.
When to go
On Monday evenings there is live music from guitarist Adelino, who plays a mixture of acoustic songs as well as some mesmerizing classical guitar solos.
The restaurant is now also open for lunches on Sundays for the first time, with a special Portuguese menu designed for families and groups of friends.
Away from the main dining room there is a small separate area with a huge table and bench seating. If you want to try a selection of dishes, then invite along some friends and gather around for a very personal meal with a difference away from the main dining room.
