Name of hotel
Conrad Algarve, Quinta do Lago
One of the Algarve’s newest five-star hotels, opened in September 2012. Contemporary without the uniformity or blandness you can find in many modern properties, it features stylish architecture by Sigma, interior design by Sigma, Miguel Cancio Martins and Rethink Interiors, and lighting by Beau McClellan.
The impressive atrium lobby is the focal point, and the eye follows the palm-lined avenue approach, through the atrium, onto the garden and pool areas, and towards the hills in the distance.
There are Portuguese touches, but the hotel has a very cosmopolitan feel to it and has introduced the Algarve to the standards often found in places like Dubai and the Red Sea. The space and the luxury offers a challenge to other five-starhotels in the region to step-up to the challenge!
The hotel is designed to change with the seasons and the mix of clientele, which includes leisure travellers (with and without families), business travellers, conference delegates and golfers, as well as acting as a social hub for the local Algarve market. It’s spacious without being overwhelming, and with enough demarcation between the main areas to offer a broad appeal.
There are a total of 154 bedrooms and suites, all with balconies and separate bath/power shower areas, and a high-level of amenities including 42'' HD flat screen TV, in-room entertainment and media centre, DVD player, MP3 sound system, WIFI, mini-bar and tea & coffee-making facilities.
There are six styles of standard room, a choice of Conrad and Deluxe Suites, and the sumptuous Roof Garden Suite, which has its own private entrance and an exclusive bridge to the spa, private parking, roof garden and balcony, private sauna and steam bath, full kitchen and use of the Personal Host (butler).
The signature restaurant is the one-Michelin starred Gusto by Heinz Beck, overseen by the multi-Michelin starred chef, who is based at La Pergola in Rome. Open for dinner, Gusto combines modern Mediterranean cuisine with Scandinavian-inspired interiors, and features an open kitchen and an outside terrace.
Louro Restaurant showcases modern Portuguese cuisine, and is open for lunch and dinner. It is also the hotel’s main breakfast restaurant, and offers indoor and outdoor dining options.
Lago, the lobby lounge, serves light lunches and snacks throughout the day, as well as afternoon tea. The High Tea experience includes your tea of choice from the exclusive selection of loose leaf Teamaker’s Private Reserve teas from Dilmah, accompanied by sandwiches, homemade cakes, scones and desserts.
Dado Restaurant & Bar is located poolside and features refreshing cocktails and a South American influenced menu. Seasonal opening only.
Shishas are also available on the hotel terrace.
(See the individual reviews for Gusto and Louro.)
The Conrad also offers a Private Chef service for your own home, office or event. The Executive Chef and Pastry Chef will design a bespoke culinary experience for breakfasts, celebrations, cocktail receptions, cooking classes or evening dinner.
Bar-prop in Gusto, before or after dinner.
Afternoon tea, pre-dinner cocktails or late-night drinks in Lago, the lobby bar.
Poolside drinks at Sereno.
Tempo Sports Lounge - private bar with a snooker table.

Why do you like the hotel?
It’s a boost for the Algarve to have another top-quality hotel brand in the region.
The rooms are incredibly comfortable, spacious, and well-equipped. Nice touches include sofas on the balconies so you can really relax and enjoy the views, the separate power showers for those who don’t like bath/shower combinations, and the TV screen in the bathtub for real addicts.
There’s enough variety within the bar/restaurant selection if you happen to be there for several days, and they are a welcome addition to the local scene for residents.
The service is also impeccable - friendly without being in-your-face.
What could be improved?
Access to the spa is a little convoluted - we’re not sure the architects got that one right.
A selection of glossy magazines (and some better postcards) in the rooms would be nice.
There are some weird and wonderful TV channels available (Armenian, anyone?) but they seem to have missed some of the more obvious, internationally-popular ones such as BBC, CNN, etc.
Is it part of a chain or a marketing group?
