Name of establishment
Corte-Real Gallery, Paderne
Rustic yet sophisticated at the same time. Spacious lay-out in a series of themed rooms, it's a little like walking around a rather splendid private home, with a look somewhere between boho-chic and a glossy interiors magazine.
What to buy?
Gifts, souvenirs, or personal items for your home. Postcards, books, ceramics, glassware, paintings, sculpture, lighting, furniture, even organic fruit and vegetables if you go on the right day - you name it. This is a living lifestyle gallery and something new and different is always happening.
It's the type of place you can spend hours in just browsing, or go with a specific purchase in mind. The helpful and friendly owners/staff will point you in the right direction.
Why do you love it?
In the heart of the countryside but a short drive from Albufeira, the gallery is the perfect setting for traditional, contemporary and abstract work, with inside and outside display areas. Offers a superb range of paintings, ceramics, lighting and gifts for sale at reasonable prices.
As well as a permanent display of items for sale, there are regularly-changing exhibitions showcasing the work of Portuguese and international artists, art classes, and special themed events which include cookery demonstrations.
When to go?
Opening times focus around Thursday, Friday & weekends (see below). It's open all year round however, and is particularly delightful in spring and summer when the gardens are in full bloom.
The current website is actually a multi-page PDF, and can take a little wading through. It does however give you a good flavour of the place.
The gallery isn't licensed, and doesn't have a café as such, but you will be offered a complimentary glass of wine, soft drink, or cup of tea/coffee as you mooch around, which is a lovely touch.
On the main Paderne road coming from Albufeira, go through Paderne for about 1km and then look for a coffee shop on the left hand side with a yellow awning and turn left. Drive for a 100 metres or so and you will see another coffee shop (red awning) on the right hand side and you turn right here. Or just follow the signs for Corte-Real which are in place but quite small, from the main Paderne road. Some off-road parking.
Whatever you want/can afford. Prices range from a few euros for art cards up to several thousand euros for original works of art, with a wide range of prices in between.
The gallery is open every Thursday to Sunday from 11am-5pm. Free entry.
