Costa d Oiro

Name of resort

Costa d'Oiro, Lagos

A good-standard four-star resort with an emphasis on high quality customer service, and located only 300 metres from Praia Dona Ana beach. Rooms are geared to being part self-catering/part hotel, with the studios and apartments having kitchen facilities and dining areas.

The rooms and apartments can be found either in the main body of the resort or across in separate buildings, giving the resort the feel of a small village.

Each room has been finished to a high standard but all have a traditional feel, with tiling and art work reflecting the locality in the Algarve, while the restaurant and bar area has a contemporary feel.

Although the resort is open to all types of bookings, it is generally focused on providing a relaxing break for couples - it’s a quiet place, ideal to come to for some time out. It’s a family-run business, and the team at the resort are motivated and are genuinely keen to help guests; many members of staff have been at the resort for several years and this is reflected in the level of service they provide.

The resort has 68 suites, made up of 16 twin-bed rooms, 36 larger studio apartments and 16 one-bedroom apartments. Although an extra bed is available in the rooms to accommodate children, the resort has primarily been designed to accommodate two adults per room.

A restaurant is located next to the main pool. The breakfast is a buffet style and has been put together to reflect the nationality of guests and local traditions, so look out for Portuguese cakes, dried fruits, cheeses and meats alongside more traditional eggs, cereals, breads and fruit. In the evenings, guests can eat off the menu, with main courses all being reasonably priced, and a rolling two-week menu is also available.

The house wine list is something that has to be seen to be believed! The restaurant boasts more than 65 house wines, all priced at €14 each. The concept behind this is to allow guests the broadest range of Portuguese wines from each region, all of a certain standard. It may mean picking your wine takes a little longer, but if you are staying for a week or more then you can try to work your way through the list.

Other facilities

There are five swimming pools within the resort, including one which is covered and heated for use in the winter months. Trips to local places of interest and tourist attractions can be arranged for guests, and spa experiences can also be organised.

Is it part of a chain?

Costa d'Oiro is part of a family-owned small group of hotels and villas in Lagos. Sonel Hotels owns the four-star Villa Monte d'Oiro, the four-star Villa Doris suites and the three-star Villa Mar Azul.

When to go?

The resort is open all year round, and with a heated pool guests can swim even in the winter months. Lagos is a popular destination all through the year but is perhaps best for those looking for a quieter holiday during the spring or autumn.

Insider knowledge

If you are looking for a taste of the traditional, the restaurant in the resort hosts a fado evening every Tuesday from April to October. This is the perfect way to immerse yourself in some Portuguese culture without having to trawl the streets of Lagos to find the best places and artists.

Why do you like it?

The owners have found their niche within the market and have stuck to what they know. The resort has a very clear identity and type of clientele who all appreciate the quiet and relaxed atmosphere.

Lagos, 300 metres from Praia Dona Ana and 800 metres from Ponte da Piedade.

Prices depend on room type and the time of year, but a twin classic room starts from around €45 per night in the low season and goes up to around €145 per night in the high season. Check the website for full details of prices.
