Extreme Algarve

Name of company

Extreme Algarve, Lagos

Type of activities

At Extreme Algarve you can take part in surfing, kite surfing, rock climbing, mountain biking, wake boarding, sea kayaking, micro lighting, scuba diving, sailing and sky diving.

The basics

Not only a wide choice of activities on offer but accommodation at HQ is also provided if required. Casa Offshore, the company’s surf and kite lodge, is modern, well-equipped for self-catering and a great hang-out to get to know your fellow surfer or rock climber. They also hold barbeques for guests and non-staying guests every Wednesday during the season.

Where do you participate?

Everyone (staying and non-staying guests) meets at Casa Offshore to be ‘kitted’ out for the day. Each activity is in a specific outdoor location, picked by the instructor as the best area for that type of sport. Conditions change hourly for water and wind-based activities, and it is common to not end up on the same beach each time, or for the activity to be limited to certain times of the day. For example, on our day out the surf instructors observed the waves before we got in. It was deemed OK for the beginners but not for the intermediates and advanced surfers, who were taken to Arrifana beach further west where the waves were bigger.

Got to see/got to do?

If you get the chance and are around for more than one day, why not try several of the activities or simply improve on your specific interest. We had a particular interest in surfing and learning how to surf, but if you are the real outdoors type you can combine a few sports over the course of your stay.

The facilities

If you have any of your own equipment (e.g. wetsuit for surfing, bike helmet) bring it with you. If not the school will provide everything you need for the day. And there are hire shops at the sporting locations as well which Extreme Algarve organise beforehand.

The training?

Whatever your level of experience in any of the activities, you are sure to enjoy yourself. The instruction is very good, and the instructors are patient and extremely helpful. They make learning the activity fun for those who haven’t done it before, and will adapt their instruction for more advanced guests who merely want to improve on their skills. For the mountain biking activity they do require you fill out a very short questionnaire that assesses your level of fitness so that you are paired up with guests of a similar level on the day out. It is a good idea to let staff now of any medical conditions when booking.

Why do you like it?

To have the opportunity to try something that you have always wanted to do but never had the chance (or nerve) to do, and to be among like-minded people with the same interests. Plus it’s a great day out and a chance to make new friends - the instructors make a point of everyone introducing themselves at the start.

Need to know

The limiting factor in all outdoor activities is obviously the weather, and certain conditions dictate what can and cannot be done. Certain activities also have a ‘season,’ so you may only be able to kite-surf between certain months. Check with the Extreme Algarve staff in advance for details. And this includes onsite accommodation which is also subject to availability. However there are plenty of hotels and apartments in the immediate area. Summer occupancy will however be busy.

Insider knowledge

Extreme Algarve plan to introduce other activities to their programme, organised directly by themselves or in association with other companies that run them. These include off-road motorbikes, deep sea fishing, paintballing, horse riding and go-karting.

From the A22, take the exit signposted for Lagos. Go straight through the first roundabout, when you hit the 2nd roundabout, take the 2nd exit, go straight through the next roundabout, continue straight until you reach the roundabout with the big ball, take the first exit, continue straight until you reach another roundabout, go straight through and Extreme Algarve HQ is 20m on the right hand side. There is a big red flag in the garden. It’s in a residential area so parking is limited. Parking directly outside is reserved for the school vehicles.

Prices are based on the individual activity and/or accommodation, and the number of days. We went on the 1 day Surfing Experience which costs €50 per person and includes transport to the beaches, equipment, lunch and instruction. In July, August and September the price is 55.

Check the website for prices of the other activities and accommodation.
