Fuji

Name of establishment

Fuji, Albufeira

Style

The front section looks like a typical Portuguese restaurant (complete with TV). The rear section has a more obvious Japanese feel to the décor, with individual tables and the centre-piece – a large teppanyaki counter comfortably seating at least 20 people.

Ambience

A friendly welcome from the mixed Portuguese and Asian staff. The service for drinks and taking your order is swift: you can then sit back and watch the culinary theatrics begin as your meal is cooked in front of you.

Food

An extensive menu of sushi, sashimi, tempura and sukiyaki (iron pot) dishes. Following starters, appetisers and soups come a wide variety of options, from a choice of individual hot and cold dishes to set menus which you can mix and match. But we’d recommend the teppanyaki, all part of the fun.

Drink

A reasonable selection of fairly-priced Portuguese wines, plus of course beers and other spirits, including Japanese beers and sake.

Why do you like it?

An unexpected ‘find’ to come across good food (of any sort, Portuguese or international) in one of the most touristy parts of Albufeira.

What could be improved?

We’re not quite sure what purpose the Portuguese section at the front serves – it was totally empty when we visited, even though the restaurant was busy. They should make the whole restaurant Japanese and either extend the eating area or turn the front into a lounge serving pre- and after-dinner drinks and tea.

When to go?

Lunchtimes or evenings (the restaurant’s on the dark side and has no outdoor seating, so you’re not missing out on the sunshine). Couples will find it fun, and it’s equally good with small-ish groups of family, friends or business colleagues. Ideal for first-timers if you’ve never been to a Japanese restaurant before (it’s by no means intimidating and the menu is very user-friendly) but you’ll enjoy it equally if you’re an aficionado.

Insider knowledge

Don’t be put off by the approach – as we said, a rare oasis of good food in a culinary desert.

They also offer a small selection of (non-Japanese) children’s dishes, as well as an extensive takeaway menu.

Size

Around 20 at the teppanyaki counter, and plenty of other tables in a variety of configurations. But worth booking ahead, especially in the busy summer months.

Location

Estrada de Santa Eulalia, Areias de Sao Joao, Albufeira. At the huge ‘globe’ roundabout just past the bullring (going from Albufeira centre towards Falesia/Vilamoura) turn right towards Olhos d’Agua. Fuji has a small frontage, and is a few hundred metres on the right hand side, just before you reach the Oura Praia hotel. Look for the restaurant’s distinctive white, red and black logo. Parking is a nightmare however in summer. You’ll probably end up somewhere near the smaller roundabout at the bottom of this road.
