Name of company
Hugo Quad Bikes, Messines
What type of activity is it?
What makes it special?
Great fun, something totally different, and a fantastic way of seeing the Algarve countryside from a new perspective. The bikes are totally safe, and (apart from a valid driving licence, as a small section of the route involves using main roads for access) you don’t need any special training or aptitude.
Hugo is an experienced guide, knows the area like the back of his hand, and makes full allowances for all ages and whatever speed you feel comfortable at going.
Where do you participate in this activity?
Just outside Messines. The treks make the best use of the surrounding countryside, and you’ll discover hills, valleys and lakes you didn’t know existed.
What is provided?
The quad bike, obviously, plus a crash helmet and (in winter only) some waterproofs. You’re bound to get dirty or dusty whatever the weather, so go in an old pair of jeans and a T-shirt/sweatshirt, plus sensible shoes like trainers. No flip-flops!
All the bikes are automatic and very easy to master. The session starts with a safety talk and then a practice drive to make sure you are confident with the controls. The bikes are sturdy and start at 250cc, and can accommodate a driver and passenger comfortably.
Children over about 7-8 are welcome as passengers (as long as they’re not of the nervous/whingeing variety!)
Why do you like it?
‘High-speed’ thrills for those who don’t necessarily like high speeds. You never go much above 50kph on the roads, and considerably less over rougher terrain, but you still feel you are travelling quickly, and there’s a real adrenalin rush, especially when you hit your stride or start climbing hills. And the views are spectacular.
On the shorter treks, you’ll just stop at a local cafe for a drink, so remember to take some money. On the longer treks, lunch is included.
In summer, about half-way round, you’ll stop for a refreshing swim in a spring-fed lake to wash off the dust. Take a swimming costume if you’re not happy skinny-dipping.
In winter, you’ll find plenty of puddles to splash through en route.
Size of place or limit of numbers
