Name of establishment
La Cigale, Olhos D'Agua
Sixties-built seafront restaurant right on the beach with great views from the terrace. One of the first - and still one of the best - in the Algarve.
Very relaxed. Genuinely friendly staff. Kick off your shoes and enjoy.
What to eat?
Fresh fish and seafood - ask for the catch of the day, on display in the ice counter. Plus cataplana, steak, chicken piri-piri and the usual suspects, all cooked very well.
What to drink?
Good choice of Portuguese wines. Ice-cold rosé goes down a treat on a hot summer day.
Why do you love it?
Perfect location. You can come here and be laid-back to the point of being comatose - what better way is there to spend a sunny lunchtime?
What could be improved?
Not their fault, but it's so busy in August you're advised to avoid it until the holiday crowds have gone home.
When to go?
Long lazy lunchtimes, early evening for a sundowner, or warm evenings in early or late summer. Try to get a table outside on the terrace - but if not, there's plenty of room inside, with equally good sea views on offer.
Parking can be difficult - it's located at the bottleneck-end of a popular tourist area - but at least there is now a pay-as-you-go car park. But the restaurant will provide free transport to and from your accommodation if you are staying within a 5 km radius.
Around 50 covers on the terrace, and the same again inside.
Right on the beach at Olhos d'Agua. Follow the beach signs and it's at the end of the road on the far right. Look for the art-deco style coloured tiles. If you choose not to use the multi-storey car park, you can walk from the top of the hill.
Sensibly-priced main dishes from around €7-12. The wine is also very reasonable - that's why we drink so much!
Lunch and evening, every day.
