What makes it special?
Whizzing across the Guadiana river at a speed of 75km/h is a thrill ride. The fact that you cross the border between Spain and Portugal on a zipline - the first cross-border zipline in the world - makes it a unique experience. Also, because of the time difference between those two countries, you arrive 59 minutes before you started!
Where do you participate in this activity?
At Limite Zero in Alcoutim (in the east Algarve), although the actual starting point is located in Sanlúcar de Guadiana in Spain.
Got to see/do?
Be brave enough to jump off the launch platform. Yes, it’s scary when you’re up there and yes, it might feel like a leap of faith, but the harness will hold, and the initial fear you might have is well worth it as the views when you’re high up in the air are amazing!
A safety helmet and a safety harness are provided. There’s no need to bring anything special as this activity can even be done when wearing flip flops (but if you do, carry them in your hands instead of wearing them on your feet - you don’t want them falling into the river). However, if the weather is cold then it might be good to bring a jumper for the boat ride across the river.
All instruction is provided by either owner David Jarman or one of his staff and they also check if your harness is tightened correctly.
You don’t need to have any previous zipline experience as it’s all pretty straightforward. Also, there’ll be people to help you at both the departure and the arrival platform. Basically all you have to do is listen to their instructions, lean back and enjoy the ride.
When to go
It can get crowded in summer time, so do book ahead if you’re planning on visiting in July or August. Weekdays are usually less busy than weekends. Naturally it’s best to do this activity if the weather is good so you can enjoy the scenery.
It’s fun to do on your own or with friends, but also makes a good family activity, provided all children are aged 14 (which is the minimum age limit) or over.
There are no refreshments provided. However, there are several bars and restaurants in both Alcoutim in Portugal and in Sanlúcar de Guadiana in Spain.
It’s recommended for people weighing between 25 kg and 110 kg.
When booking, keep in mind that there’s an hour time difference between Spain and Portugal.
Limite Zero’s address is Av. de Portugal, 21595 Sanlúcar de Guadiana, Huelva, Spain.
Coming from the Algarve you drive to Alcoutim, park your car (there’s plenty of free parking just outside the town centre) and walk to the riverside where you take a ferry across to Spain (ferry tickets can be bought at the stall next to the jetty. The cost of a one-way ferry ticket is 1 euro and Limite Zero will reimburse you for this). The Limite Zero office is just across the street from where the ferry arrives in Sanlúcar de Guadiana. From there they’ll drive you to the departure platform in 4x4s which takes about 10 minutes.
The jump costs €17 per person when pre-booked online.
Outside the high season the zip line is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, but in the summer season it’s open seven days a week.
