O Bote

Name of establishment

O Bote, Olhão

Style

A traditional Portuguese seafront restaurant, with pavement seating for outside dining and a huge indoor eating area, split into sections. Simple, honest and straightforward - what you see is what you get. Given the location, fish and seafood - cooked on an outdoor grill - are obviously the main focus, and like the offerings of many restaurants in the town, it’s fresh, delicious and excellent value.

Ambience

Very busy in summer, and deservedly so. It happily serves the local population and its predominantly Portuguese visitors, but the waiters speak good English and there’s no reason to be daunted about visiting if you’re just on holiday.

What to eat?

Fresh fish and seafood, caught locally that day, has to be your main choice, although there’s also a range of other traditional Portuguese meat, fish and rice dishes, including chicken piri-piri and assorted fish, seafood and meat cataplanas.

What to drink?

There’s a good selection of Portuguese wine, at sensible prices.

Why do you like it?

Down to earth atmosphere that’s a million miles away from the ‘international’ feel of much of the central Algarve. You know you really are in Portugal. And even if you’re a long-term ex-pat, you get a real sense of being ‘on holiday’ even if you only live 20kms or so down the highway.

When to go?

Evenings. Get there reasonably early, as it can get very busy, especially if you want a seat outside.

Insider knowledge

The portions are huge - you could easily split, say, two dishes between three, especially if you’ve had starters. If you’re not too familiar with Portuguese cuisine, don’t play safe. Ask the waiters to explain what the various dishes are and enjoy something different.

Location

122 Avenida 5 de Outubro - on the main promenade in the centre of Olhão, almost opposite the fish market. Look out for the large model boat and the elderly man in the captain’s hat still doing a sterling job serving customers.

Cost

Around €15 per person for a main course and wine.
