Style and ambience

The hotel’s upmarket restaurant, but still fitting into the smart-casual category in keeping with the Pine Cliffs holiday experience. Open seasonally, it includes indoor and outdoor dining options.

The interior is traditionally decorated and you get a genuine sense of being in Portugal. The outdoor terrace features a live cooking station and overlooks the pool and grounds, with a distant sea view.

The food

As you would expect from the name (The Fisherman), fresh fish and seafood are the specialties, combining traditional Portuguese flavours with the contemporary style of international resort cuisine.

Recommendations include seafood platters, steamed Atlantic crab, cataplana or the surf & turf: grilled rib eye steak and tiger prawns.

The drink

The wine list comprises a comprehensive selection of Portuguese favourites, and the sommelier will be delighted to offer recommendations.

Why do you like it?

The elegant, relaxed resort dining experience doesn’t get much better. If you’re new to Portugal, it’s also a ‘safe’ (as in unthreatening) introduction to the country’s cuisine.

When to go?

When the weather is good, it would be a shame to miss out of the alfresco dining experience. At lunchtime you can people-watch as the restaurant is at the heart of the resort. In the evening, get there early enough to enjoy a sundowner before night falls.

As you’d expect, it’s busy during the summer, and prime tables are at a premium, so book in advance.

Location

A short walk from the main hotel reception.

The Pine Cliifs Hotel is located on Estrada das Açoteias, close to Olhos d’Agua, between Albufeira and Vilamoura. It’s signposted from the EN-125 but perhaps not that easy to find if you are new to the Algarve. Check the website or telephone for detailed directions.

Cost

Sample starters: Seafood soup with aniseed (€16); traditional Portuguese clam dish (€19); fried carabineiro Atlantic prawn (€69).

Sample mains: Atlantic seafood rice (€60); monkfish cataplana with prawns and clams (€60), John Dory "Al Pesto" (€34); sole meunière (€49); fresh fish sold by weight.

Sample desserts: Mango carpaccio (€12); red plum soup (€10); hot chocolate cake (€12).

Opening times

Seasonally for breakfast, lunch and dinner from mid-May to late October, depending on the weather. Check with the hotel for exact dates.

Breakfast: 8am to 10:30am

Lunch: 12pm to 4pm

Dinner: 7pm to 11pm
