Name of hotel
Penina Golf Resort
Timeless elegance. Built in the 1960s and incorporating then-modern English hotel design styles with traditional Portuguese overtones. Refurbishments since have updated the look without losing any of its intrinsic charm.
Relaxed, as you would hope from a hotel that largely relies on leisure business. Golfers and families love the place, and there is none of the stuffiness you might expect from a five-star resort. The dress code is casual throughout the property, and well-behaved children (and golfers!) are always welcome.
188 rooms and suites on four floors, all with either pool, golf, garden or mountain views. On a clear day, with good eyesight, you can catch a glimpse of the sea.
The rooms have all the mod cons you would expect at this level, and include singles, twins/doubles, superior twins/doubles, executive rooms, and junior and grand suites.
Modern, neutral-coloured bedroom furniture contrasts with the traditional terracotta floors, and the rooms on the whole are a good size, although the fourth-floor mezzanine-style rooms sacrifice a little space in exchange for the hotel's best views.
The food is international, with a Portuguese twist.
Sagres - main restaurant serving buffet breakfast and themed buffet dinners, with inside and outside seating.
Grill Restaurant for fine dining.
L'Arlecchino - Italian restaurant.
Sir Henry Cotton's Club for snacks.
Seasonal pool bar.
Dunas Beach Restaurant for casual dining (at Alvor, with free shuttle June-September).
The main hotel bar just off the lobby serves a wide range of drinks, including cocktails, and features live music.
Sir Henry Cotton's Club is more informal - a golf/sports bar where you can also watch the major sports events on TV.
The daytime pool bar is a popular option when the weather is good.
Why do you like it?
Penina broke new ground - it was the first golf course and luxury hotel in the Algarve, and Sir Henry Cotton's vision has become his legacy. Familiar, comfortable and stylish without being pretentious or intimidating, it's no wonder the hotel does well with repeat business. Some people wouldn't stay anywhere else in the Algarve.
