Pine Cliffs Hotel

Name of hotel

Pine Cliifs Hotel, Praia da Falesia

One of the Algarve’s longest-established five-star resort hotels/property developments (previously branded as the Sheraton Algarve), set in extensive grounds and perched on the cliffs overlooking Falesia beach.

The main hotel has a Moorish flavour, and the original private villas and townhouses are built in the modern-with-a-twist-of-Portuguese style popular in much of the Algarve. The more recently-opened facilities and newer properties blend in well, and there is an overall feeling of space due to the impressive landscaping and well-thought out planning.

NB: The rooms and facilities at the adjacent Pine Cliffs Residence complex have been reviewed separately. See the link on the right.

Family-friendly, stylish without being formal. You know you are in a quality environment, but with most of its emphasis on leisure, it still has a relaxed ‘holiday’ feel. Popular with families (and with a high ‘yummy mummy’ count), older couples will probably enjoy it more if they have grandchildren in tow. Romantic pairings might feel a little ‘lost’, especially during summer or school holidays. This is not Sandals.

However, the hotel sees its fair share of weddings and engagements and somehow everyone seems to blend into the space and enjoy the buzz and atmosphere. As the resort is so large, you can still drag a sunbed off into a quiet corner underneath the pine trees and lose your self in a good book!

The hotel is over 20 years old, but the ongoing refurbishment programme ensures the rooms do not feel dated. The Portuguese tiles in the bedroom are lovely and give a real sense of 'belonging' to Portugal.

Even the standard rooms are designated Deluxe, and offer a more-than-generous 34 sq. metres of space, combining traditional touches with all mod cons. Upwards from there are Grand Deluxe rooms and a selection of suites, some on split levels. All rooms have sea, pool or garden views and the hotel is thankfully very low-rise.

The food

Eleven restaurants and bars (many of which are seasonal) give guests a wide range of choices, and include O Pescador (fish & seafood), Yakuza by Olivier (Japanese) and Piri-Piri Steakhouse (Portuguese), as well as a beach bar, a golf clubhouse and a variety of other informal and international outlets offering everything from drinks and snacks to salad and pizzas.

The drink

There’s a hotel bar, a poolside café and kiosk, plus the cliff-top Mirador, the ideal spot for a sundowner.

Why do you like the hotel?

The perfect place for a family holiday. With an extensive range of activities and facilities for both adults and kids, it gives everybody the chance to relax, whether you want full-on family days or a little ‘me’ time.

The standards are consistently maintained, and whether you buy property or vacation ownership there, or just visit the hotel on holiday, you have peace of mind that everything will be as it should be.

What other facilities does the hotel have?

A wide range, including tennis courts, gymnasium, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, health and beauty salon offering some spa treatments, a nine-hole golf course with a full golf academy, water sports on the beach, supervised kids’ clubs, and various organised activities and special events.

What could be improved?

Despite the number and variety of outlets, the F&B offering has never been that exceptional compared to some other five-star resorts in the Algarve. We are still waiting to be 'wowed.'

When to go?

Almost always busy during the main school holidays (Easter, summer and half-terms), so you need to book ahead if you have children. Quieter at other times, when there are often some good deals to be secured.

Insider knowledge

Outside of the main holiday seasons, the hotel is deservedly popular with conference and incentive groups.

If you don't have children, we'd advise you not to go in school holidays. The place can be a kid-fest. Which if you do have children, makes it probably the best place in the Algarve to enjoy. The staff positively welcome children in restaurants, and as the hotel has only one main entrance which is manned by security 24/7, then children have a great time exploring and enjoying the vast gardens with a real sense of security and safety. The beach is also one of the longest and safest in the Algarve.

Is it part of a chain or a marketing group?

Part of the Starwood group’s Luxury Collection of top-end hotels and resorts.

Set in 72 acres, so a low density resort despite the fact there is a lot going on. 215 bedrooms in the hotel, plus a wide variety of private villas and townhouses, some of which are available to rent. Plus a vacation ownership scheme, and 154 suites in the Pine Cliffs Residence complex.

Estrada das Açoteias, close to Olhos d’Agua, between Albufeira and Vilamoura. Signposted from the EN-125 but not that easy to find if you are new to the Algarve. Check the website or telephone for detailed directions.

Check the hotel website for details of special promotions.

Opening times

Usually year-round, but check in advance for winter bookings in case the hotel closes briefly for low-season maintenance.
