Pine Cliffs Residence

Name of resort

Pine Cliffs Residence, Praia da Falesia, Albufeira

One of the Algarve’s newest luxury resorts, built to complement the adjacent facilities at the Pine Cliffs Hotel. Under the same management, it's also part of the Luxury Collection.

Pine Cliffs Residence comprises 154 two- and three-bedroom luxury suites. Decorated in a contemporary, elegant and comfortable style, the suites offer plenty of space in the bedrooms, bathrooms and lounge areas, and come with air-conditioning, fully-equipped kitchenette and laundry, and LCD TVs, plus balconies offering a variety of views over the golf course, pool and garden areas.

The apartments are modern, but somehow convey the essence of the Algarve. They blend into the beautiful and elegant pines, and clever landscaping makes it feel like the apartments have always lived in the 'rough' of the adjacent golf course.

NB: The rooms and facilities at the adjacent Pine Cliffs Hotel have been reviewed separately. See the link on the right.

Like the hotel, the suites are family-friendly and stylish without being formal. You know you are in a quality environment, but with most of its emphasis on leisure, the resort still has a relaxed ‘holiday’ feel. Particularly popular with families due to the facilities and safe environment.

We really loved the feel of this resort-within-a-resort. It feels more exclusive than the main hotel, and is a real haven away from the main hotel pools and facilities. A night-cap on the balcony listening to just the silence is a wonderful feeling in the middle of a large resort.

A choice of three types of suite: Comfort Suite, Garden Access Suite with direct access to the surrounding garden areas, and the Penthouse, located on the top floor for sweeping views of the gardens and golf course. All the accommodation is in low-rise clusters, with separate names and numbers for each cluster. All have fully fitted kitchens with a utility room.

Pine Cliffs Residence has its own Mediterranean-style restaurant, O Grill, which is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Guests also have the choice of eating at the various restaurants and bars (some seasonal) at the Pine Cliffs Hotel, including Pescador (fish & seafood), Il Giardino (Italian) and Piri-Piri (Steakhouse), as well as a beach bar, a golf clubhouse and a variety of other informal and international outlets offering everything from drinks and snacks to salad and pizzas.

Served at Casa Pine Cliffs (the on-site reception) and O Grill, as well as the poolside café and kiosk. Plus, again, the variety of outlets at the Pine Cliffs Hotel, including the cliff-top Mirador, the perfect spot for a sundowner.

Why do you like the resort?

The ideal place for a family holiday, especially given the flexibility of two/three bedrooms for the price you pay. With an extensive range of activities and facilities for both adults and kids, the resort gives everybody the chance to relax, whether you want full-on family days or a little ‘me’ time.

The pool area is fantastic, and one of the best of any resort in the Algarve. There’s also plenty of space for getting some peace and quiet, given the spacious layout and landscaping of the whole integrated complex.

The dining, kitchen and laundry facilities within the suites make them particularly suitable for families juggling feeding times, tired children and washing, as you feel more relaxed and in control than you probably would in a standard hotel room.

What other facilities does the resort have?

Pine Cliffs Residence has Casa Pine Cliffs, its own reception for check-in and check-out, as well as O Grill restaurant, the outdoor swimming pool, a fully equipped gym, massage rooms, sauna, steam-room and a mini market. Within walking distance (or via the shuttle train) are all the other facilities of the Pine Cliffs Hotel, including tennis courts, gymnasium, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, health and beauty salon offering some spa treatments, nine-hole golf course, water sports on the beach, supervised kids’ clubs, and various organised activities and special events.

What could be improved?

The food at O Grill is good but not great, and therefore expensive for what you get. And the mark-up on the wine prices is astonishing.

When to go?

Almost always busy during the main school holidays (Easter, summer and half-terms), so you need to book ahead if you have children. Quieter at other times, when there are often some good deals to be secured.

Insider knowledge

The apartments are part of a condo-leaseback scheme, so in fact owned by investors which will keep the management company on its toes! They are super luxurious and beautifully designed. All interiors are standard to meet the exacting requirements of the Luxury Collection.

It’s a tidy walk from the Residence to several of the facilities at the Pine Cliffs Hotel, so be warned if you have unwilling children or infirm grandparents in tow. When the weather’s good however, it’s a delight, and a much better option than waiting around for the shuttle train (although the kids will love that until the novelty wears off).

And the whole resort covers a lot of ground. Take a map with you until you get your bearings.

Is it part of a chain or a marketing group?

Both Pine Cliffs Residence and Pine Cliffs Hotel are part of the Starwood group’s Luxury Collection of top-end hotels and resorts.

Set in 72 acres, so a low density resort despite the fact there is a lot going on. The resort is located on the cliff tops above Falesia beach, one of the longest and safest in the Algarve.

Estrada das Açoteias, close to Olhos d’Agua, between Albufeira and Vilamoura. Signposted from the EN-125 but not that easy to find if you are new to the Algarve. Check the website or telephone for detailed directions. Driving in, follow the signs for Pine Cliffs Residence, where there is a separate check-in from the hotel. Don’t unpack your luggage from the car until you have checked in, as you might face a short walk or drive to your actual room.

Opening times

Usually year-round, but check in advance for winter bookings in case the hotel closes briefly for low-season maintenance.
