Quinta da Calma

Name of establishment

Quinta da Calma, Almancil

What is it?

Centre and retreat for yoga, tai chi, meditation and natural treatments and therapies, with regular and one-off classes, courses and workshops run by locally-based and visiting practitioners in their various fields. Instruction is in English and/or Portuguese.

The facilities

The Meeting House is designed for yoga, tai chi and other forms of movement/exercise for larger classes up to 35. It can also hold 60 people theatre-style for meetings.

The Pavilion is suitable for yoga or similar classes for up to 20, and can seat 40 people theatre-style.

Sala Devi is for classes of up to 15, and can seat 30 people theatre-style.

Al’s Place is a lounge-style area suitable for discussion groups of up to 20.

There are also three general treatment rooms in the Lotus Room, used for treatments and therapies.

The accommodation

Rondettes: four separate units, each with small living room with sofa bed, separate double bedroom, kitchenette and shower room.

Jacaranda: a block of three units each comprising one good-size room with two single beds, a shower room and a separate toilet. There is no kitchen, but a refrigerator and a kettle are provided.

Buganvilia: modern wooden building comprising a mix of four single and four double bedrooms. There are four bathrooms, so two bedrooms share one bathroom. No kitchen facilities.

Pinetrees: self-contained wooden cottage with one bedroom (2 single beds), bathroom, kitchen, and living/dining room. There is a sofa-bed in the living room which can sleep an additional two adults. The living room opens onto a terrace which overlooks a small private garden and pond.

Hybiscus: cottage set away from the main residential area, closer to the office and treatment rooms. It has two bedrooms, both with two single beds, a kitchen, bathroom and living/dining room. The living room opens onto a terrace with views over the pine trees.

The large pool that belongs to the private villa of Sylta Kalmbach, the owner and founder of Quinta da Calma, is available for residential guests at set times during the day.

The timetable

It can vary but usually includes regular Monday-Friday classes in various types of yoga, tai chi and meditation held by well-known local teachers such as Sol Viegas and Lucy Cannon. Treatments and therapies are also offered by local practitioners in such areas as massage, reiki, healing, chakra balancing, stress management and aura/tarot reading.

Residential and non-residential workshops and retreats are also run on an ad hoc basis, and Quinta da Calma also puts on occasional open days to showcase the facilities and types of activities available. Check out the website/Facebook page for updates.

Why do you like it?

Quinta da Calma is set in 11 acres of natural surroundings and is a true oasis of peace, space and relaxation.

The accommodation is rustic in style, but in keeping with the surroundings and the type of activities/courses offered.

What could be improved?

The website suffers from information overload, and needs some serious streamlining.

The turn-off to the centre as you come off the EN-125 is poorly signposted and very easy to miss. Follow the detailed directions on the website to the letter, but still don’t be surprised if you get lost!

Food options

There’s a vegetarian eatery, Gaia Sol, open on Wednesday lunchtimes, and a weekly organic produce market, also on Wednesdays.

Just off the EN-125 on the outskirts of Almancil, almost opposite S. Lourenço church and cemetery.

Prices vary according to the duration/complexity of the classes/treatments. Ask for details.

Opening times

Reception: Monday to Friday, 1.30-5.30pm
Public Holidays - the centre is closed

Gaia Sol Vegetarian Eatery: Wednesdays from 12.30-2.30pm
Organic market: Wednesdays from 12-3pm.
