Name of company
Quinta do Pombal
Where is it?
Housed in a traditional Portuguese quinta with its own gardens and outdoor pool, between Loulé and S. Brás de Alportel.
Type of activity
Regular classes, private sessions and special workshops in yoga, Lu Jong (Tibetan healing yoga), zen meditation, shiatsu, art and holistic therapy.
Yoga, Lu Jong and shiatsu are taught by Corinna Melinkat. Zen meditation is orientated by Katja Krabiell. English, German and Portuguese are spoken fluently.
The classes are held in a studio in one wing of the house, overlooking the pool and gardens. The studio is light, airy and exceptionally quiet, and can comfortably take up to ten participants - the ideal group size in fact. You’ll go barefoot, and should wear loose clothing or sportswear such as shorts, T-shirts, leotards, etc. Bring a towel and water, and your own yoga mat if you have one, although the latter are provided, along with auxiliary material like towels, belts, cushions, chairs and bolsters to assist with your alignment and comfort.
The classes are aimed at all levels, from beginners to full-time devotees. Corinna is very patient and softly-spoken, making everybody feel relaxed and making sure that you progress at a pace you feel happy with. The Lu Jong, which we tried, places the emphasis on gentle movements, meditation and breathing techniques, and is particularly suitable for those who might feel that yoga is only about bending yourself into uncomfortable-looking (and perhaps impossible) positions!
Why do you like it?
This is pure relaxation, and an inexpensive indulgence if you want to go regularly. All you’ll hear in the gardens is birdsong, the ‘workout’ is not physically taxing, and you’ll come away at peace with the world.
The classes are for everyone, regardless of ability, experience, age, weight, fitness or sex. They’re a great way of getting into yoga if you’ve never thought about it before or been a little wary of trying, and the perfect motivation for regular yoga practitioners who like the camaraderie of numbers.
You can also book individual treatments and counselling with a clinical psychologist, as well as private shiatsu treatments and therapeutic yoga, the latter for people with chronic diseases or limited mobility.
The quinta also runs an occasional series of workshops, bringing in specialists in such areas as Chinese calligraphy.
Corinna started doing yoga as a child, and has been a certified integral yoga teacher since 1989. She is also a certified shiatsu practitioner by the European Shiatsu School (2000) and a certified Lu Jong teacher by the Tibetan doctor Lama Tulku Lobsang.
