Name of establishment
Rei das Praias, Ferragudo
Upmarket beach restaurant with a focus on fresh fish and traditional Algarvian dishes, served with fabulous views over one of the loveliest beaches in the region.
During the day the restaurant serves lunches to beach goers and visitors looking for something a bit special. In the evening, the candlelit tables are ideal for couples.
This is not a flip-flops and bikini restaurant, but there are snacks and drinks available from the outside kiosk during the day for anyone wanting to take something to the beach.
Simple and uncomplicated dishes with an emphasis on the freshest locally-sourced fish.
The seafood and shellfish is as fresh as it gets, and although there are meat options available, it would be criminal not to sample some of the house specialities - have a look in the chiller cabinet and pick out your own fish or follow the recommendation of the waiters.
While some of the dishes are at the higher end of the price scale for beach restaurants, there are still cheaper options available, including the Algarve staples of chicken piri-piri or sardines.
The restaurant has an extensive wine list, with its own house Douro wine complete with its customised label.
Wines cost from €14 a bottle upwards, and there is a wide choice of Portuguese, Italian and French varieties on the list as well as a large selection of Champagnes.
Why do you like it?
This is one of those places that makes you feel like you are truly on holiday - whether you are or not. The crisp white linen on the tables, the smell of the fresh fish, the sounds of the waves - it is the perfect Algarve experience.
The reputation of Rei das Praias, which has been in business since 1976, means that it enjoys a varied clientele of all nationalities, with many Portuguese diners as well as foreign clients and numerous repeat customers.
When to go?
Book a table around sunset and enjoy a glass of wine as the sun goes down before settling in for dinner.
During the summer it is best to book a table at any time of the day.
In winter, it’s a perfect hideaway - watch the crashing waves from behind the comfort of the large glass screens.
What could be improved?
The toilets are located outside the main body of the restaurant which is not great in the winter months when you have to leave the warmth of the restaurant.
If you want to take a piece of Rei das Praias back home with you, then ask to see the range of tasteful merchandise on offer - everything from a bottle of house wine to a director’s chairs for the patio.
During summer, look out for the famous beach parties that take place beneath the rafters of the restaurant, with live DJs playing until the early hours.
Around 40 covers inside and a further 20 or so outside in the snack bar area..
Praia dos Caneiros, Ferragudo. The beach is located between Ferragudo and Sesmarias and is sign-posted from the main road. The restaurant is on the beach itself but there is parking available (very limited during the high season).
