Style

As simple as it comes - traditional décor, long tables, paper tablecloths and a minimum of fuss. The type of restaurant that is low on frills and high on atmosphere. Who needs art on the walls when you have rows of fish tanks and the moving theatre of lobsters and crabs?

Ambience

Friendly waiters, and a busy, occasionally frantic atmosphere. Popular with locals, plus any tourists willing to seek out somewhere slightly away from the familiarity of the coast. Dress down rather than up - eating seafood can sometimes be a messy business!

What to eat?

It's justifiably famous for its superb seafood, especially prawns (which come automatically as your starter), crab and lobster. You won't find fresher anywhere in the Algarve. The crab, served with toasted rolls and their own-recipe garlic mayonnaise, is superb. They do offer other non-seafood dishes but why bother?

What to drink?

House wine or a decent bottle from a local vineyard (white, vinho verde or rosé for obvious reasons with the seafood) or a cold beer. Rui's offers great, but simple food. No need to complicate matters by ordering an expensive vintage.

Why do you love it?

Despite being inland, it's the most famous seafood restaurant in the Algarve, and never disappoints. Fish and seafood should, ideally, be eaten overlooking the sea. Rui's is the exception that proves the rule.

When to go?

Drop in for lunch after shopping or sightseeing in Silves (a lovely town with real atmosphere) or early in the evening. It can get very busy later on, so you might need to book.

Insider knowledge

A great place to go with a group of friends or family. You can be as loud as you like - it simply adds to the atmosphere.

Size

Seats about 100 inside depending on table layouts, and a further 20 outside.

Location

Rua Comendador Vilarinho 27 - but ask locally, as everybody knows it. It's in the pedestrianised area of the old town, close to the market, so there's no parking. Leave your car at the bottom (or top) of the hill and head there on foot. You'll certainly appreciate the walk after your blow-out!

Cost

Around €25 per head for a great meal with wine.
