Name of company
Shinobi Academy, Lagos
What type of activity is it?
A school for the martial arts, where you can participate in a variety of disciplines including Brazilian Ju-Jitsu, Muay Thai, mixed martial arts (MMA), circuit training, ninjitsu, personal security tactics, kickboxing (adults and children from 6 yrs+) and Krav Maga.
What makes it special?
It’s the only full-time mixed martial arts school in the Western Algarve. And as well as the classes in the evening, during the Spring and Autumn students can participate in an intensive week-long training camp taught by international coaches from Ireland, Iceland, Brazil and Thailand.
Where do you participate in this activity?
The Academy is located in the Iberlagos apartment complex opposite the fire station at the top of the town in Lagos, above Dona Ana beach.
Got to see/got to do?
If you are serious about learning a martial art, it’s a good idea to try them all to see which one/s you like. Mixed martial arts has become very popular over the years, and many students are now interested in learning aspects of more than one discipline.
Equipment for the classes is provided for beginners. However regulars are advised to purchase their own training ‘kit’. This includes a judo suit for Ju-Jitsu, boxing gloves, MMA gloves, shin pads, hand wraps, gum shield and groin guard. The school is equipped with boxing pads, kick pads, skipping ropes, punch bags, and changing and shower facilities, whilst refreshments and food can be purchased from the bar downstairs.
Beginners are always welcome, and are personally supervised and coached by the instructor, who is a third Dan black belt in Ninjutsu and a blue belt in Brazilian ju-jitsu. He has also been on several visits to Thailand to train and compete at a Muay Thai camp.
Why do you like it?
If you are not into going to the gym or training alone, this makes for a good alternative. The training is serious with a fun element, and everyone who attends wants to learn and get fit. The training schedule is varied and you learn a small bit of technique each night, making it easier to progress and develop your art. The instructor has an eye for spotting students who have a talent at a particular discipline, and will spend extra time to help them improve as well as encouraging them to compete. There’s also a friendly and social atmosphere and best of all - girls are also welcome.
Private lessons are available before the classes start for those who want extra coaching in any of the disciplines. 1hr private tuition costs €30 - discounts are available for five private classes or more. Check with the individual instructor for private kick-boxing fees.
From the A22, take exit 1 signposted for Lagos. Take the 2nd exit off the roundabout and drive through the town going through two roundabouts, then opposite the fire station turn into the Iberlagos apartment complex. Turn left at the security hut and turn right into the parking area. The Shinobi Academy is down two flights of stairs.
