Name of course
Type of course
Just outside Silves. Well signposted from the A22 although the location is fairly remote.
Number of holes
5,615m (from back tees)
What type of golf club is it?
It's a private golf club but non members can pay to play. Prices range from €50 in summer to €70 in peak season. Maximum handicap for women is 35 and 28 for men. However I wasn't asked for my handicap certificate on arrival.
Pre-booking is recommended, especially if you want to play in the morning.
Normal golfing attire applies.
A couple of nets and a putting green provide below-average practice facilities. Buggies and golf clubs are available for a cost.
Why do you like it?
Some excellent holes in the middle of the course make Silves good value for money. It seems to be less busy than the other Pestana courses, and this increases your chances of a quick and enjoyable round.
What could be improved?
The first two holes and the last three holes are not as attractive as the rest of the course. I would also question the pricing of buggy hire at €40 when you have to keep the buggy on the path, resulting in long walks to your ball.
The 13th - a par 5 that starts high up in the hills with stunning views. After a "tee it high and let it fly" drive, a tricky second awaits. The longer players are able to have a go at the green in two, but others need to try and negotiate a dogleg right protected with a large water hazard. A real risk and reward hole!
The 7th - one of the longest par 5s I have ever played. Not only is it long, it's narrow, punishing any wayward shots.
Level of challenge
A lower handicapper will face a moderately tough challenge, provided they play from the back tees. The mid to high handicappers will also find Silves to be an adequate test of their golfing ability.
Who plays there?
Pestana property owners get membership of the course included, but most have to travel some distance to this course from their properties, so it tends to be quieter than the other Pestana courses.
When to go
The course is busier in the traditional Portugal high season (February to April and September to November) and the prices do change over the year with different promotions. It tends to be busier in the morning.
The restaurant (which sells snacks) was unfortunately closed for maintenance when I visited the course.
Unlike many of the other courses I have played in the Algarve, all marked distances are to the middle of the greens and not the front.
Pestana Golf & Resorts
Membership to the Pestana courses is now available for the first time without owning a property. Prices as above.
Open 7 days a week. It only closes for extreme weather and maintenance.
