Not what you might expect from the location and initial first impressions. One of the many small restaurants on Vilamoura Marina, many of which look a little uninspiring from the outside. But don’t be put off. The food is wonderful! It also allows you to enjoy Japanese and Thai cuisine without the need to get dressed up for the occasion.
Laid-back, slightly canteen style, but with a very buzzy trade and a nice feeling.
What to eat?
The menu is huge. If you are a sushi or sashimi 'virgin', ask for help: the staff know the menu well. Unlike a lot of Japanese restaurants, the chefs are hidden at the back, but they again will advise and help.
A set Sushi menu will cost just €13.50 and gives you a chance at seeing what you like. It comes with yakitori to start and six pieces each of sushi and sashimi, plus miso soup and tea or coffee.
A combo platter with 18 pieces costs €21; up to 63 pieces costs €59. Which makes it very competitive with Sushi Yama takeaway at Apolonia.
Nice starters which include great pork pot stickers and deep-fried prawn dumplings for just €5 per portion of four, and a whole host of unusual and different starters for those who want to try something new.
The menu also has a good offering of teppan yaki with the beef fillet at €12 - but sadly no table and entertaining chefs!
Hot traditional dishes (which we haven’t tried yet - the menu choice is enormous) are priced between €11-14.
Desserts are interesting if not traditionally Japanese. Green tea crème brulee and sesame & ginger crème brulee are two we don’t think you will find in Japan, but nice none the less.
The sushi and sashimi is fresh, tasty and very well presented. The spicy tuna is lovely, and we could have simply kept trying more and more to eat our way through the menu.
A recent (2017) addition is a range of excellent Thai dishes on to the menu.
What to drink?
Sake? Japanese beer? Green tea? Plus a Portuguese wine list.
They also do take-away and catering.
At lunchtimes, Tako has been discovered by the Portuguese business market, and it is nice to see a good restaurant in the marina, as they are very few and far between!
On the opposite side of the Marina to the Tivoli Marina Hotel.
