Name of establishment

Wax, Faro Island

A combined restaurant, bar and lounge that has ‘beach’ written all over it. Inside at ground-floor level it’s modern and slightly funky: think upmarket student hangout meets IKEA, with a wood-burning stove, high bookcases and arty decor. Outside, the location steals the show, with a central bar and rows of tables on a mezzanine terrace offering you a great vantage point above the beach.

Changes with the seasons and the time of day, and whether you are inside or out. On the terrace you’ll find a wide mix of ages enjoying the sunshine and the scenery along with their food. Inside, the crowd tends to be invariably younger, and the mood can range from earnest conversations during the day to a real party vibe at night.

The food

Salads, snacks, sandwiches, pasta, seafood, steak, pizzas, hamburgers: nothing ground-breaking perhaps but tasty and well-presented. You’re here mainly for the setting and the company.

They also offer 3-course daily suggestions if you’re the type who can’t make your mind up.

The drink

The usual suspects: wine, beer, spirits, soft drinks, etc.

Why do you like it?

Location, location, location. You couldn’t get any closer to the beach without being on it. Kick off your shoes (if you’re wearing them in the first place) and relax.

When to go?

Lunch at almost any time of the year - even in winter, as long as it’s not raining, there’s still something magical about sitting outside and looking at the sea when you eat.

Warm summer evenings for sundowners and dinner.

As the first (or last) pit-stop on the way to or from the airport.

Insider knowledge

It doesn’t look anything special from the outside but don’t be put off. There are several beach bars and restaurants along the same strip, all housed in fairly unremarkable-looking buildings but go here - it’s our favourite. And avoid O Costa (across the road) like the plague.

Rather confusingly, they seem to have three Facebook pages - THIS is the one you want.

Avenida Nascente, 10, Faro 8005-520. Go over the bridge onto Faro island, turn left along the main street that runs parallel with the beach, and it’s about 200m or so on the right hand side. Off-street parking.
